Quick Start Guide

A high level walkthrough to get your first roll scanned and converted. Follow these steps to see a positive on screen in just a few minutes.

  1. Install the desktop app and open it.
  2. Choose a folder with your film negative scans.
  3. Select a frame and pick a sampling / metering mode.
  4. Rotate or flip as needed.
  5. Convert the selected frame, or entire roll, to positives.
  6. Exported JPEG or TIFF is ready for opening in your editor.

Troubleshooting

If something looks off, these quick checks usually fix it.

  • Flat, low contrast image: Try a different sampling mode (Center-weighted or Custom region).
  • Strong color cast: Re-sample avoiding any film borders or out of bound details.
  • Soft or blurry output: Double check focus in your original scan; the app keeps the original resolution.
  • Export not visible: Confirm the export folder and file format (JPEG or TIFF).

FAQ

Which film formats does DIY FilmLabs support?

Any film format that you can scan or photograph and save as a supported image file. Most users work with 35mm and 120 film, but large format scans work as well.

Do I need RawTherapee installed?

RawTherapee is only required if you want the extended camera RAW workflow. You can still convert TIFF scans without it.

Are my original negatives or scans changed?

No. Conversions are non destructive. The app creates new positive files and leaves your source images untouched.

Can I use these conversions in Lightroom or Photoshop?

Yes. Exported JPEG or TIFF files are ready to import into your existing editing workflow.
